S.P.D – Spatial Protest Device by students Danielle Faria Mendes, Igor Bernardes Almenida, Ligia Machado Pinto and coordinated by Profa. Dra. Juliana Torres de Miranda from the UFMG has won the competition Democracy: Spaces of Protest.
The Embassy of Brazil in London and TAM airlines award the winning group with return tickets to London and accommodation during the opening of the Brazilian exhibition RAW as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2008.
The jury had the following comments about the winning entrance:
‘Challenging device –not sure that it would work- but it is by far the most inventive project.
Graphically adequate, the model could be improved.
I will go away with my mind challenged by the re-iterative question: Can sound be manipulated so that human character resonates upon hardware?’
Sir Peter Cook
‘I personally enjoyed the inventiveness of the scheme and the provocative attitude that is behind the design.
“There is no longer any clarity as to where wants to go, there is only one other force, perhaps even more instinctive and intuitive, spurring the movement on: shouts.”
This sentence summarizes the thrust of the project. Well done.’
Marcos Cruz
‘Interesting proposal in its irreverent approach to the brief, in its engagement with noise and movement (rather than with the purely visual), in its exploration of a negative dimensions, both in the physical and metaphorical sense.’
Ana Paula Araujo
One work from each school will be exhibited at RAW during 21st of June to 20th of July. All panels exhibited will be posted here on this blog on the 31st of May 2008.
Congratulations to the S.P.D team/UFMG and thank you to all the schools and participants that submitted proposals to Democracy: Spaces of Protest.
