Brasil Arquitetura / Scope

Rodin Museum

We search for an architecture that arises from a profound connection to the cultural foundations of the place and the protagonist. Even though, you couldn’t say that this is regional architecture. Not at all! If the cultural foundations of people and societies are the human dimensions such as communication and relationships, this architecture shall always be universal. Its issues are universal: living together, aiming for tolerance towards differences, looking for comfort, creatively developing construction techniques, ways of dwelling in the world.
The project shall be classified along these lines. Our understanding and our choices originate from within these issues. As anthropophagites, intellectually, spiritually and poetically we digest what is given and then make our propositions.

Brasil Arquitetura / About

May 23, 2008

The architectural practice Brasil Arquitetura was founded in 1979 by the architects Francisco Fanucci, Marcelo Ferraz and Marcelo Suzuki, graduates of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU USP).

They carry out architectural, urban and restoration projects, as well as product design, with a range of purposes: residential houses and buildings, shops, restaurants, industrial buildings, leisure centres, and public buildings. They have realized a number of prize-winning projects in Brazil and abroad, such as the Bairro Amarelo in Berlin (Germany), the Villa Isabella in Hanko (Finland), the Polytheama Theatre in Jundiaí, the Museum of Japanese Immigration in Registro, the Afro-Brazil Museum in São Paulo, the Rodin Museum in Salvador and the Bread Museum in Ilópolis. The practice won the Grand Prize of the VII International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo and is currently developing the projects of the new Synagogue of the Shalom Community in São Paulo, a Railway Museum in São Paulo, the residential and community complex of Vila Nova Esperança in the historic centre of Salvador, and a state community centre with primary and nursery school in Santo André.

In 1986, the architects set up the joinery workshop “Marcenaria Baraúna”, producing high quality wooden fitted and design furniture.

The practice and the joinery are now run by the partners Francisco Fanucci and Marcelo Ferraz and are located in the Vila Madalena district in São Paulo. In 2005, a selection of their projects was published in the book “Brasil Arquitetura”.

Francisco de Paiva Fanucci graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU USP) in 1977. He co-founded the architectural practice Brasil Arquitetura together with Marcelo Suzuki and Marcelo Ferraz in 1979 and the joinery workshop Baraúna in 1986. He designed a number of wooden furniture. He teaches at the Escola da Cidade (São Paulo) since its foundation in 2002.

Marcelo Carvalho Ferraz graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU USP) in 1978. He co-founded the architectural practice Brasil Arquitetura together with Marcelo Suzuki and Francisco Fanucci in 1979 and the joinery workshop Baraúna in 1986. Between 1977 and 1992, he collaborated on a number of projects with Lina Bo Bardi, and worked with Oscar Niemeyer in 2002. He ran the “Monumenta” program between 2003 and 2004, a government program for the restoration of historic cities in Brazil.

He was visiting professor at the University of Washington in Saint Louis (U.S.) in 2006 and currently teaches at the Escola da Cidade (São Paulo).
